Digital Radiography
Digital Radiography is replacing conventional dental x-rays and provides several benefits to patients. A small sensor instead of the film used in conventional x-rays transmits the image taken to a computer monitor. This requires less radiation exposure; roughly one-tenth the dose of conventional radiographs. It also provides digital adjustment to further diagnose the pathologic condition and affords the patient a highly visible image to assist in their understanding of their problem and its resolution.
Enhanced visibility
Enhanced visibility provided by loupes and fibre optic illumination as well as surgical operating microscopes has opened up new vistas for the treatment of both non-surgical and surgical endodontics. Due to improvements in illumination and high magnification optics, calcified or blocked canals that may have gone undetected can now be located. Additionally, retreatment of endodontic cases can now be managed with greater efficiency and success.
Rotary Nickel Titanium files
Rotary Nickel Titanium files now augment the stainless steel files used to clean and shape the root space. Nickel Titanium is 5 times more flexible than stainless steel and this flexibility replaces many of the problems experienced in the past by the use of stiff, stainless steel files. Dr. Serota has lectured to his colleagues on the use of this evolutionary technique since its introduction.
Irrigants and special chemicals are used to assist in the sterilization of the shaped root canal space…..they remove residual layers or cuticles that harbour bacteria enable a complete and thorough seal.
Electronic apex (length) indicators
Electronic apex (length) indicators are digital devices that measure the length of the root canal electronically. Length determination was formerly done with x-rays (at least two) which were often difficult to read and much less accurate.
Thermoplastic gutta-percha
Thermoplastic gutta-percha is the filling material placed inside the root along with sealers to fill and close the root canal space. The use of heat maximizes the adaptation of the material as it is condensed into the shape created during instrumentation.
New materials are being researched that chemically bond to each other and to the tooth creating a better and better seal. Dr. Serota is involved with the clinical research being done to sophisticate these materials.
Ultrasonic handpieces
Ultrasonic handpieces are used as well for cleaning and preparation of the root canal using vibration. They have revolutionized endodontic retreatment enabling the safe disassembly of restored teeth as well as enabling advancements when surgical correction of root canal problems is indicated.
