Muscle Relaxants

Our experience with the use of muscle relaxants has shown them to be a valuable adjunct to endodontic procedures. Unlike other dental procedures, endodontic therapy requires that the patient remain open for almost the entire time (approximately 45 minutes to an hour). This places strain on the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and the pterygoid muscles (under the cheekbone) which can cause stress and discomfort. These agents used have mild sedative and hypnotic effects in addition to anxiolytic or anti-anxiety properties.

The amount of medication used is based upon your age, weight, limitations of access to the tooth to be treated and expressed concern. Some may find that they feel sleepy afterward. In most cases this is a function of stress release or simply general fatigue. Regardless, the approach is safe, without side effect and very beneficial.

Should you choose to use the relaxant, please ensure that you have some one who can drive you home following your appointment.
